Siroop

Siroop was developed from a desire to help. We are a small-batch product, female-led, business located in Cape Town, South Africa. Our ingredients are organically grown, natural, and locally sourced. We do not use any mechanized or chemical processes when manufacturing our products, so every batch is homemade with attention to detail and immense care. Siroop is not a laboratory, it is a kitchen in a loving home. Our ethos is to support a sustainable, zero-waste business model and we are proud to say that anything that is left unused is repurposed. We believe that every part has a place, and Siroop’s intention is to lead by example.

Why name the brand Siroop? The name was inspired after a trip to Amsterdam and is the Dutch translation of syrup, defined as the concentrated juice of a fruit or plant. In 2019 our founder was introduced to a more effective way of extracting the active constituent gingerol from the ginger root. Gingerol has active anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties which is what we seek when adding ginger into a cup of hot tea. This tonic feels as effective as an over-the-counter cough syrup. The original concentrate was not designed for flavour, it was designed for functionality. After passing on the concentrate method to a few friends and family during times of sickness, and receiving positive feedback, our founder felt that this concentrate should be developed into a product. The problem: how could she make this “function-over-flavour” concentrate taste delicious without spoiling its healing qualities? After a few weeks, with no healing qualities compromised, Siroop had developed its first delicious ginger tonic.

Whilst developing the recipe, our founder noticed that there was excess pulp and beautifully aromatic ingredients that most would consider waste. Desperate not to throw away quality, fragrant leftovers, it was decided that this “waste” would be repurposed. Not one drop, or one fragment, of the produce is binned. Every element is used. Siroop’s true creativity has shown itself in finding solutions to not be wasteful. We make sure to source recyclable, reusable and eco-friendly packaging for our products and we encourage local consumers to choose the Pickup option at Siroop HQ when ordering. This option is bag-free to try reduce our waste footprint even further.
