Homtini Guest Farm

Homtini is a PGS certified organic farming collective that cultivates the land in a sustainable way, growing organic produce for the local market and promoting small growing enterprises. Our 90Ha working organic farm which in Khoi means ‘the passage’, lies along the old Seven-Passes Route in the lusciously green Eden area and has held true to its meaning. Over the years the farm has been and continues to be a journey of learning, collaboration and perseverance in establishing a collective of organic farming initiatives.

At ‘Homtini’ our philosophy has been one of doing our best for the direct environment whilst at the same time working together with our neighbours, utilising organic and permaculture principles, sharing tools and trade, and extending our knowledge and skills to establish an economically viable production of naturally grown goods.

We are small scale producers that farm organically, meaning that no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers are used. We strive to make these healthy organic fruits and vegetables, which are manly blueberries, leafy greens, root veggies, pulses and herbs, accessible for everyone. We maintain our pastures with our small herd of ‘Nguni’s’, the original cattle of the Xhosa, Zulu and Swazi people who brought them with them during their migration to southern Africa between 600 and 1400 AD. This means that they are ideally suited for the climate and are naturally resistant to ticks and other local diseases.

The market garden is a section of land that has been dedicated to growing a diversity of organic seasonal vegetables. The space is shared with other local growers who have partnered with us. Together we use intensive organic farming systems with high yields in a balanced farm ecosystem. Our model is based on growing fresh produce for direct sale to businesses and the public in the greater Knysna area. We pride ourselves on fostering long-term relationships with restaurants that trust us to grow specific vegetables to suit their customers’ needs. As part of our environmental and community ethos, we welcome people to come and harvest their own produce or collect it from our farm. We value everyone that is interested in learning how we grow together.
