Boschrivier Farm & Stables

Boschrivier Farm & Stables is a sustainable effort: we offer pasture-fed pigs, free range eggs and homegrown produce.

We grow our fruit, herbs and vegetables organically and any excess veggies go to our pigs or chickens (that thank us with fresh eggs daily), or we process it into scrumptious bottled fare. At the kiosk where our horse trails start (open during lessons or outrides, or by prior arrangement with cottage guests), we sell fire wood, horse manure, nursery plants and you can even spoil yourself to a cup of coffee and preserves on sale here, while you wait for a lesson or outride to conclude.

Our pigs are free range & pasture-fed. Their meat has distinct marbling of fat throughout, making every cut tender and succulent. They enjoy an ideal farm range to make the happiest of hogs. The pasture-fed pigs at Boschrivier Farm are in the truest sense of the word, free-range. We strive to give our pigs as close to a natural life as possible in a farming setup. We provide our pigs, breeding stock and piglets alike with predominantly pasture as food source. They forage and graze on vegetation which gets re-sowed regularly into their camps. Diet is supplemented with a home-made grain mix to ensure they get everything they need, and they have plenty fresh water for drinking.

We grow fruit, herbs and vegetables according to permaculture principles, using composted manure & organic pest control. Excess produce go to the free-range pigs & chickens, or is processed into yummy preserves. We have a herb nursery at our kiosk which includes some creepers and indigenous trees. Have a coffee while you wait. You can also buy fire wood, manure, free-range eggs, jams or preserves.

We’ve renamed the farm Boschrivier after the Boschfontein river running through the property. The ownership and management of the farm is shared by two couples who live on the property: Gerhard & Maggie Steyn and Hannes & Nicky du Plessis. Hannes & Nicky have a background in the hospitality industry doing guiding and lodge management. They have also run a landscaping business and Nicky has groomed horses in Europe (Italy, Scotland and New Zealand) for competitive riders backing and schooling horses. Gerhard is in a technical field still doing offshore contracts and Maggie has a strong Corporate IT background.
