Wild Peacock

Wild Peacock is a South African fine food wholesale supplier, importer, exporter and processor, selling quality & service to chefs since 1991.

Our commitment and responsibility towards our staff, our suppliers and customers has never been stronger as we face the COVID-19 pandemic on home soil.  Our company mission has always been to Provide Chefs with Quality Food Solutions, we are now extending this to the home user by doing deliveries straight to their front door. The combination of businesses being required to temporarily shut down and people staying home has caused small local businesses to suffer. Some of this will be temporary, but some business owners will be forced to shut down for good. The government is doing what it can in terms of financial relief and other initiatives, but that can only go so far and for so long. We have to preserve the unique character of all of our local restaurants, deli’s, wine farms and small hotels. This vibrant small business community is what is going to draw back the tourist to the Western Cape.

Wild Peacock was started by Sue Baker based on her trade with the oyster producers of Saldanha Bay. For over 30 years she’s been working with them and building the relationships that guarantee we get the best oysters on the bay. Small, medium, extra-large – whatever your guests demand, you’ll only get the best live oysters delivered by Wild Peacock.

Sustainability, traceability and consistency are at the heart of everything we source and distribute here at Wild Peacock Products. When we purchase fish for example, we look at the suppliers accredited labels, such as ASC, MSC, Friend of the Sea, GLOBALG.A.P. or SASSI. All of our farmed seafoods contain at least one of these accreditations. We also look at whether or not the Fish In Fish Out ratios (FIFO: the efficiency at which the aquaculture converts a weight-equivalent unit of wild fish into a unit of cultured fish) are adhered to when sourcing farmed seafoods. Sustainable fishing guarantees that there will be populations of ocean and freshwater wildlife in the future. Consistency comes through in the availability of these seafoods, to ensure you are able to servethese items on your menus, and be specific about the species without having to worry about what you might get from day to day. Traceability is found through the sustainable farming of most of our seafoods right from the larvae form, to being delivered to your door, and whether there were hormones or antibiotics ever fed to the fish. When ordering seafood from us, you can be assured that you’re making the right choices, because we’ve already made the background checks on your behalf.

As a business we ask ourselves ‘What will ensure the delivery of quality products and services to consumers?’ Not only are we talking about quality in the sense of perfectly constructed products. We are talking about quality products; the ones built with social, environmental and commercial impact in mind. Sustainability is created at the source of our products and services. It’s created when we know who we’re buying from and why we’re buying from them. As a business we are working towards ensuring that all of our external suppliers are aligned and committed to the same principles and values that we are.

Plastic waste is littering our environment, polluting our seas and killing aquatic life. Our aim at Wild Peacock Products is to reduce the amount of packaging without compromising on quality. We have started using cardboard boxes to pack our products in and cut out 60 % of the excessive plastic packets that we were using, our goal is to reduce this even further. These boxes that we are now using, are fully recyclable and we would like to encourage all of our customers to recycle the boxes rather than throwing them away.  Should we have any waste from our fresh fruit and vegetable product range, this waste is composited and given back to mother nature on the Wild Peacock Family Farm.  As a company we support the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle.
