Tortoiseback is more than a beautiful permaculture farm located in a lush valley in the northern slopes of the Swartberg Mountains in The Great Karoo. These days Tortoiseback is growing as a learning centre on a vegan theme where individuals and small groups can retreat to discover more about cultivating, harvesting, and preparing plant-based food, agroecology, yoga, art, and interspecies communication. A few days at Tortoiseback is an inspiration for anyone who is interested in living in a more conscious, ethical, and sustainable way; or for those just needing a rejuvenating break.

The tranquil atmosphere on the farm is conducive to quiet contemplation, communing with nature, and reveling in the extensive garden where flowers, herbs, fruit trees, heritage roses and vegetables thrive together in a naturally charming way. A river runs through it lined by a forest of poplar trees, in contrast to the surrounding areas of mountainous Karoo wilderness.
