In the 17th century, when ships sailingthe Spice Trade route from Western Europe around the tip of Africa to the spice islands of the East, the Company’s Garden in Cape Town, was the original farm set up by The Dutch East India Company to provide sailors with the fresh fruit and vegetables they needed to continue their journey and escape the ravages of scurvy. Over the years it transformed into a botanical and public leisure garden until in 2014, a historical replica of the original Dutch vegetable garden has been planted using the original irrigation techniques, heirloom and indigenous vegetable varieties. It is open to the public in this superb inner-city heritage garden.
